Central Oregon Pod Meets and Exhibits

Published authors and Central Oregon SAQA members June Jaeger, Sarah Kaufman, Pat Pease and Wendy Hill shared the highs and lows of being writers at our August meeting.  June spoke of retaining control by self-publishing.  Wendy, Sarah and Pat said working with a good editor was key for them.  Wendy had the long view…she published her first book in the 1990s when the author was responsible for her own photography.  Sarah and June reported that having a published book stimulated their teaching careers.  Wendy and Pat concentrate more on promoting their book and exhibiting the work that has come out of their collaborative efforts.  Each of the authors had a skill or technique or premise that made what they had to say book worthy.  Nobody reported getting rich by being an author!

There will NOT be a Central Oregon SAQA meeting in September.  We will be at the Oregon regional conference, New Dimensions…Into the Future!

SAQA Oregon Regional Exhibit Committee by Sherrie Moomey
Members of the SAQA Oregon Regional Exhibit Committee began meeting in late June to develop our next regional exhibit.  The current focus of the committee, composed of members from each pod, is writing the prospectus for the Call for Entry and contacting venues across Oregon to assess potential for our show.  The goal of the committee is to complete the prospectus and submit our proposal to SAQA for approval in time to release the call for entry at our conference in September. We are all excited at our progress and look forward to sharing the exhibit prospectus in September.

Concrete & Grassland SAQA Exhibit by Georgia French

The Road Trip to Grants Pass and Medford was a lot of fun.  The rooms we reserved at the Riverside Inn were snatched up and a great group of SAQA members from around the state were there for the openings of SAQA Oregon's Regional Exhibit "Blending Poetry & Cloth" (Medford) and the national SAQA Exhibit "Concrete & Grassland" (Grants Pass).
At the June 3rd opening of “Concrete & Grassland", a First Friday event for the Grants Pass Museum, around 300 people saw the exhibit.  At the July 1st First Friday gathering, 365 people came to see the show.  On July 9th there was an Artists' Talk and four of the artists came and had a wide-ranging discussion with the visitors and those of us connected with the show.  The Grants Pass Museum of Art said that the show was breaking all their records, with 50-60 people per day coming in to see the quilts (57 in all).  It is quite possible that they will host another national SAQA exhibit in three years, as this was their fourth time for hosting one.

Ashland SAQA Rogue Art Quilters by Lynne Goulette
Ashland Rogue Art Quilters meeting is held on the third Monday of the month at 2 pm at Sew Creative in Ashland.  It is immediately following the Journal Quilters meeting at 1pm.  July meeting was quite casual as there were only about 6 members present.  We discussed the conference and encouraged all to enter a 3-d piece as well as register both for the conference and for June Dunnewold in Eugene and Salem.  We also reminded members of upcoming deadlines for two SAQA shows later this fall and encouraged everyone to enter.  We discussed our next challenge but did not come up with a new one since there were not too many members present.  In August we will continue to have show and tell as well as our critique as people bring in their work for this. August meeting will be led by Grace Ladygo with some help from Mary Ruzich.

For more information you can contact Lynne Goulette at lynnegoul@gmail.com.

Central Oregon SAQA Pod by Jan Tetzlaff
The group Doors themed quilts debuted at the July 2016 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show.  The quilts were hung in a garden and made a beautiful statement of the creativity, talent and diversity of 28 SAQA artists unified by theme.   Beginning Friday, September 2 the quilts will hang for a month in Cascade Sotheby’s International Realty, 821 NW Wall St., Bend.  A First Friday artists’ reception is scheduled for the opening day.

Book publishing is the theme for the group’s Thursday, Aug. 18th meeting to be held from 3-4:30 pm at The Stitchin’ Post in Sisters.  Sarah Kaufman, June Jaeger, Pat Pease, Wendy Hill and Jean Wells are all members who have written and published work.  They will share their experiences with the group.

No pod meeting in September as we will be attending the Regional conference in Salem.

For more information contact Jan Tetzlaff at jmtathome@hotmail.com

Portland SAQA Pod by Annette McFarlane
Our August meeting on Wednesday, the 17th, from 10-12PM., will be a studio tour.  Four of our members- Gerrie Condon, Anita Kaplan, Jo Noble and Kristin La Flamme will open their studios to us.  Members are encouraged to form carpools and three of the studios are close to the streetcar.  For directions, please contact annettemcfar@gmail.com.

Our July meeting was at Mary Ann McCammon’s home in Sherwood, where we enjoyed a picnic, beautiful views and did a show and tell.

Valley South SAQA Pod by Georgia French
The Valley South pod meets the third Friday of each month at Eugene Textile Center, 1510 Jacobs Dr., Eugene 97402 at 2 p.m., and members can meet for lunch at 12:30 p.m. at New Day Bakery, 449 Blair Blvd.
Valley-South continues to perk along with about 20-25 attendees at each meeting.  We are so enthusiastic it's hard to fit everything into our two hour allotment of time, but we also get a great social hour ahead of time as we meet for lunch.  We are still looking at relatively unknown abstract artists and reacting to them with sketches, small studies, and once in awhile even a finished quilt.  We continue our monthly demos which give us the meeting space at the Eugene Textile Center (a terrific perk).   We are starting to rev up for our SAQA Showcase during Quilt County a year from now, once again to be at the Oregon State University Memorial Union gallery. Our theme this time is "Pathways."  Our member Vera Rogers is hosting her third "retreat" at her ranch in Days Creek, Oregon.  This year it's "independent study" but we know Vera will share her expertise in all kinds of dyeing, painting, resists, etc., and the lucky ones who go will learn a lot, get a lot done, and have a hugely wonderful time at the ranch.  There is always a battle for the choice spots to sleep out under the stars!
Our new facilitators Katie Walwyn and Carolyn Walwyn are doing a great job.  We have some exciting ideas in the pipeline, so stay tuned for more from Valley-South next newsletter!
