"Exploring Layers" Moves to the Coast

Oregon SAQA's third juried exhibit, "Exploring Layers," has completed its run at the Chehalem Cultural Center in Newberg, to widespread acclaim, and will now move to the next venue.  It will open on April 18th, 2014, with a gala reception from 5-7pm at the Coos Art Museum in Coos Bay, Oregon.

The show will run through June 28th.  The Coos Art Museum is located at 235 Anderson Avenue in Coos Bay.  Admission is $5; $2 for students & seniors.  The museum is open Tuesday - Friday 10am - 4pm, and Saturday 1-4pm.  www.coosart.org

A 32-page print catalog of "Exploring Layers" is now available, for $8.  The catalogs will be available at the Coos Art Museum and other future venues for the exhibit, or contact Georgia French at gfrench@rosenet.net for more information.

Portland Parlor Meeting March 19, 2014

Our next Portland SAQA meeting will be on Wednesday, March 19 from 10 a.m. to 12 midday. Please note the change of venue: we will meet at the Beaverton Public Library, located at 12375 SW 5th St, Beaverton, OR 97005 (between SW Hall Blvd and SW Tucker Ave). The library has a parking lot, and there is street parking. Enter the lobby and turn left. Our meeting room will be straight ahead of you. 

We have plenty to talk about! This is what I have on the agenda so far; please email Elizabeth Bamberger if you would like to add anything.

- Artist Statements. This will be our second session working on our Statements - remember, they are always works in progress, so don't agonize about whether your Statement is "perfect", just bring your most recent version and we'll tap into each others' ideas and inspirations. If you haven't yet written a Statement, just come and listen and get ideas. Last November we talked about both your Artist Statement (this describes who you are as an artist) and Gallery Tags (a "sound bite" of 25 to 50 words about a specific piece of work.) This time around, we'll revisit both of these, breaking up into small groups so we can each give and get plenty of feedback. There are plenty of articles out there to help us think about this process - google "Artist Statements". Here are just a couple:

- News, announcements, brags, show and tell. I think show and tell is one of the most inspiring parts of our meetings; bring a finished piece or a work in progress, and let's have fun.

We don't have facilities for providing drinks or snacks at the library, but feel free to bring your own. See you there!

"Exploring Layers" Opens in Newberg, Oregon

The SAQA Oregon exhibit "Exploring Layers" is now open at the Chehalem Cultural Center. The Center is located at 415 E. Sheridan Street in Newberg, Oregon. There is a parking lot right behind the Center and also street parking. The Center is open Tuesday - Saturday, 9 am - 6 pm, plus scheduled class and events times.

The Oregon and SW Washington SAQA artists participating in the current show are: Mary Arnold, Karen Bates, Suzy Bates, Catherine Beard, Diane Born, Christina Brown, Nancy Bryant, Gerrie Condon, Betty Daggett, Anne Daughtry, Diane English, Sheila Finzer,Georgia French, Betty Gientke, Mary Goodson, Carol Heist, Jill Hoddick, Laura Jaszkowski, Paulette Landers, Sheryl LeBlanc, Amanda Millier, Sara Miller, Sidnee Snell, Mary Stiewig, Naomi Weidner and Jean Wells.

The show will travel throughout the state in 2014 until May, 2015. Future venues will be posted when the list is finalized

SAQA Oregon Regional Conference Registration Closing Soon

Registration for the Oregon SAQA Conference "New Horizons" to be held in Newberg, Oregon on Thursday March 6, 2014 at the Chehalem Cultural Center, will be closing soon! If you haven't quite got around to registering yet, now is the time to do so! There are a few places left, and we would like to fill every last one!

We have a great day planned, with a keynote address by Kris Sazaki, the President of SAQA, and other presentations and panel sessions with many outstanding and experienced artists. It's a great occasion to meet and network with fellow SAQA members, and you will have the opportunity to see the debut of the "Exploring Layers" exhibit.

Trisha Hassler Offers Studio Classes

Hope this finds you all well, excited about the year ahead and ready to try something new in the way you work with fiber.  I will be offering several classes this spring as outlined below and hope to cross paths with you all soon:

HAND STITCHING
The Hand Stitching Class is always a favorite of mine, I have attached the class handout for a brief summary of what to expect over the 2 days.  Please let me know if you have any special requests or questions about this class.  I have been working on a thread blending technique that would be fun to share as well.

CREATIVE ATTACHMENTS
Several of you also requested my class on Creative Attachment Techniques for adding additional found object or hand made elements to your work.  Here is a handout for that class.  This class covers several different techniques you can use with many different materials, not just fabric.  You are invited to bring something you are already working on to move it forward. Also great to know about special requests.

Each class will be held at my home studio in NW Portland.  There is space for 5 students in each 2 day session.  Because of the intimate group, I will address personal areas of interest and have lots of time with each person, so bring something you are working on, have questions about or want to try for the first time.  The cost per student per day is $125.  Bring your own lunch, or get lunch from close by Whole Foods , Cha Cha Cha, or other.  Street parking or mass transit available.

Expressive Stitching
When you work in a way that invites an observer in for a closer look, it requires a slower pace... both for the maker and for the viewer. The intimacy that results is very rewarding for both.  You will experiment with time honored hand stitching techniques that will enhance your work. We will explore length, thickness, density, contrast and color by making samples used to construct a small reference book. We will also work as a group on several small collaborative pieces to create a unique
example of hand work.

Exploring Creative Attachment Techniques
Would you like to add an unexpected element to your art quilt? Perhaps some found object that helps tell your story with a little more imagination. Something curious that’s not expected in the world of quilts.Bring your challenging found objects to class and we’ll explore various techniques to attach these elements to your fiber art works so they enhance your piece and intrigue your viewers. You will work with various tools and elements ending up with samples to showcase your favorite techniques for reference.
