 Color by Accident: Exploring Low-Water Immersion Dyeing is an extension of the techniques Ann introduced in her ground-breaking book, Color by Accident: LowWater Immersion Dyeing. In an orderly progression of topics with over 250 samples of fabric and 17 live demonstrations, Ann teaches how and when to vary her basic method, including how to:

• mix colors without exact recipes
• create a smooth value gradation across one piece of fabric
• manipulate the fabric to create many different textures
• manage large pieces of fabric in small spaces
• see the differences in the singlechemical dyecolors
• adapt the Procion® dyes to silk
• follow up with your own explorations with dyes

About the Exhibit
2012 marks the unveiling of the second edition of BAM’s much-anticipated biennial. With a focus on fiber, one of the most thriving yet underexposed media in contemporary art, BAM Biennial 2012: High Fiber Diet continues BAM’s commitment to celebrating both tradition and innovation in art, craft and design in the Northwest. Selected from close to 300 applications, the 44 artists chosen to participate in BAM Biennial 2012: High Fiber Diet represent both established and emerging artists, either living or working in the Northwest. Submissions to the 2012 edition were reviewed by a panel of four jurors comprised of: Elissa Auther, Associate Professor of Contemporary Art, University of Colorado; Stefano Catalani, Artistic Director, Bellevue Arts Museum; Elizabeth A. Brown, former Chief Curator, Director of Exhibition and Collections, HenryArt Gallery, University of Washington; and Marci McDade, author, artist and editor of Surface Design Journal.

The majority of the works are specifically created for the exhibition. They range from traditional to new expressions of fiber art, where concepts, media and ideas merge. Jointly, they offer a glimpse into how artists continue to transform and reinvent fiber’s already rich tradition in the Northwest.

Ann Johnston Teaches Dye & Quilt Design Classes in Lake Oswego

Ann Johnston will hold a series of fabric dyeing and quilt design workshops in her Lake Oswego studio in 2012. To ensure maximum individualized attention, class size will be limited to four participants. Registration opens January 10, 2012. Registration closes for all workshops February 10, 2012.

A fast-paced run-through of the possibilities with new variations offered by the low-water immersion dyeing approaches introduced by Ann in her book Color by Accident

2. Add Dye Painting and Printing to Your Options
4 days, May 17-20, 2012

An introduction to all the basic surface design techniques with thick and thin dye, using brushes & rollers, stamps & blocks, stencils & screens.

3. Silk Only—Understanding the Alternatives
5 days, May 23-27, 2012

An exploration of dyeing a wide variety of silks using methods such as painting, printing and immersion with soda ash, citric aid and vinegar, including the selective removal of sericin. Some experience with Procion MX dyes required.

4. Focused Dyeing
5 days, July 20-24, 2012

Is there a particular texture or pattern or theme or color that you want to use for a quilt or series of quilts? Consider it a puzzle to solve in this workshop. Some experience with Procion MX dyes required.

5. Untangle Your Design Decisions
5 days, November 1-5, 2012

A personalized exploration of the elements of design—line, shape, color, value, pattern, texture—to answer that constant question: “Now what do I do?”

6. Using Your Own Hand-dyed Fabric
5 days, November 8-12, 2012

Bring a pile of your own hand-dyed fabrics to build on the ideas that prompted dyeing it or on ideas that are suggested to you by the fabric.

During the month of July, the Oregon History Museum will showcase a stunning selection of art quilts made by local and international artists. The exhibit began with booking Quilt Art 20, an exhibit featuring quilts created by 20 professional international quilt artists. Since its beginning in Britain in 1985, the traveling exhibit features artists from the United States and Europe, representing eight countries in total. To insert a local element to the exhibit, a selection of historic quilts from the Oregon Historical Society’s collection were added to the exhibit, as well as quilt art from 10 contemporary quilters in Oregon. Quilt Art 20 became Timeless Quilts.

Oregon Artists include: Ann Johnston, Hilde Morin, Jean Wells, Jeannette Meyer, Susan Bucharest, Quinn Corum, Wendy Huhn, Marjorie Post, Kathie Kerler and Helene Knott.
