Our SAQA Oregon Pods are meeting and engaging in interesting discussions and activities. Two SAQA exhibits are opening in Oregon venues in June. Jane Dunnewold is giving a lecture and trunk show and teaching two classes in August. In September we’ll hold our second SAQA Oregon Regional Conference in Salem.
There are opportunities for SAQA Oregon Members to provide input to and participate in regional activities, including transportation of quilts from Medford to Sisters in July, a Call for Table Top presentations at the September regional conference, a request for questions related to the copyright talk at the regional conference, the Call to Artists for 3-D artwork to be exhibited at the regional conference, and a request for member profiles on the SAQA Oregon blog.
The SAQA Conference in Philadelphia was informative and inspiring. There were varied and interesting activities and speakers and opportunities to view art including art quilts. Highlights for us were the Lightning Talks, attending the opening of the Art Quilt Elements exhibit at the Wayne Art Center, and a presentation on SAQA Exhibits. Lightning Talks webinar:

1. Requests for Input and Participation
*
SAQA Oregon Regional Exhibit, Blending Poetry & Cloth, request for volunteers to transport quilts to and from The Rogue Gallery in Medford.
Jean Wells will deliver the quilts from Sisters to The Rogue Gallery in Medford
on or before May 27th. It would be great if someone could meet her halfway on the route to Medford. We need a volunteer for the following: Pickup quilts at The Rogue Gallery on
July 29, 2016 and deliver them back to Sisters, OR.
Please email Leotie Richards
lotidesignworks@gmail.com or Jean Wells
jean@stitchinpost.com to commit to the above tasks.
* SAQA Oregon Regional Conference CALL FOR TABLE TOP PRESENTATIONS (
September 22, 2016)
A major part of the SAQA Oregon Regional Conference in September will be sharing ideas from throughout the region. We are looking for those creative ideas or techniques that you have found and want to share with your fellow artists. Your presentation doesn’t have to be earthshaking, but something that you think other members would enjoy learning - it can be a quick tip you use, a new gadget or method you’d like to share. Just send a short description and a photo if possible. Free conference registration to all table top presenters! So start thinking about how you can participate by sharing your knowledge and send your proposal to
annettemcfar@gmail.com.
Deadline has been extended to June 1.
Request for Proposal (PDF)
Contact Annette Mcfarlane
annettemcfar@gmail.com for more information.
* SAQA Oregon Regional Conference COPYRIGHT TALK request for questions.
At the SAQA Oregon Conference in September, we are having a talk on the topic of copyright. There are so many different issues that can be covered on a subject such as this and we want to make sure your questions are answered. There seem to be two general areas of interest: Will what I want to use violate someone else’s copyright. Or, How can I copyright my own work?
Please send the questions you want to have addressed to
sherriculverquilts@gmail.com. Sherri will send them to the attorney, so the speaker can be prepared with a talk targeted to our needs.
* SAQA Oregon Regional Conference CALL TO ARTISTS for the "NEW DIMENSIONS ... into the future" 3-D Art Exhibition

2. SAQA Exhibits in Oregon
* The National SAQA exhibit
"Concrete and Grasslands" at the
Grants Pass Museum of Art opening reception will take place
Friday, June 3rd 2016 from
6 - 9pm. We're told by the curator the openings are very well attended by 300-400 people.
The exhibit runs from June 1st to July 29th.
Although the Concrete and Grasslands show is currently shown on the SAQA website as scheduled only in Grants Pass, we have been assured by SAQA that other venues are in the works. At any given time SAQA has ten or more exhibits around the world! There are 58 pieces in the C&G exhibit, which could limit its exposure to larger venues only, so SAQA has determined that the show might be divided into two parts, but this may not happen if larger venues are available. Stay tuned! Future venues will be posted on the main SAQA website as they are confirmed, and the C&G artists will be notified by the Exhibit Coordinator, Diane Born.
* The Regional SAQA exhibit
"Blending Poetry and Cloth" runs June 3rd to July 29th at
The Rogue Gallery in Medford with the
reception taking place
Friday June 17th from 5pm to 8pm.
* Attend both shows by stopping by The Rogue Gallery from 10am to 5pm on June 3rd and then taking the 30 minute drive to Grants Pass to attend the opening reception there.

Central Oregon SAQA Pod by Jan Tetzlaf
May Meeting
Thursday, May 19 from
3-4:30 at the Stitchin' Post in Sisters
Notes
What makes good art?
SAQA's Central Oregon pod explored the subject at April's meeting with metal artist and co-founder of Art in the High Desert, Carla Fox. The criteria for the nationally recognized art show held annually in Bend is:
* Original thought and intent, going beyond the expected, the usual.
* Strong overall concept
* Excellence in craftsmanship
* Consistency of style and presentation
Studio design, what works and what doesn't, was dissected at the group's March meeting. We enjoyed a tour of June Yaeger's purpose designed studio space in her Sisters' home.
At both meetings there was terrific show and tell as well as applause for members’ work accepted into shows.
May will bring a show of wearable art by member Deb Wilkinson and continued discussion of dimensional fabric art.
A reveal of quilts made for a Central Oregon challenge, Doors as Portals, will be our June meeting. Unified by size, 18" by 40", and material - fabric - the quilts explore aspects of doors as portals, thresholds, entrances, passageways and a frame to new experiences. The quilts will be displayed as a special exhibit at the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show.
July the group will take a summer break and resume meeting the third Thursday of August.
Portland SAQA Pod by Annette McFarlane
May Meeting
Wednesday, May 18, 10:00 AM, Beaverton Community Center, 12350 SW 5th St, Beaverton
Notes
The Portland Pod has had several interesting meetings including how to fix your photos for entry, presentations by members of their favorite or first and last quilts, and Mary Ann McCammon’s Kenya Quilt project. Our “question of the day” prompts interesting conversations. Next month we’ll have a tutorial on how to critique based on design principles followed by critiques of members quilts.
Valley South SAQA Pod by Marika Pineda
May Meeting
The Valley South pod meets the third
Friday of each month at Eugene Textile Center, 1510 Jacobs Dr. Meetings begin at
2 PM, and members can meet for lunch at
12:30 at New Day Bakery, 449 Blair Blvd. The next meeting is
May 20th.
Notes
To fuel inspiration, each month we choose one woman artist and explore her work. Members create responses in any medium. Past artists have included Lynda Lanker, Angie Lewin, Analee Fuentes, and Carmen Herrara. The chosen artist for the May meeting is Amrita Dutia.
At each meeting one of our members presents a technique demonstration that is open to the public, starting at
3:15. Past topics have included dextrin resists, katazome, thread painting, basic embroidery. In June we’ll have a demonstration on leaf printing, and in July the demo will be mounting quilts on stretcher bars.
In March we had a show, “Lagniappe,” at Eugene Textile Center. Members showcased 12 x 12 pieces to be donated to the annual SAQA benefit auction.
