The Oregon SAQA regional exhibit Blending Poetry and Cloth just finished an exhibition at the NW Quilt Expo in Portland. Several people mentioned that they thought it was the best work in the show. The curators, Leotie Richards, Karen Spencer and Jean Wells are working to secure a spring date at Pioneer Place Gallery in Portland. Right now the quilts are in secure storage while we're fabricating rods that will be suitable for all gallery venues. Upcoming dates for gallery venues are The Rogue Gallery in Medford June 3rd - July 28, 2016, Willamette Heritage Center, Salem Sept. 22 - Dec. 24, 2016. We have two venues secured for 2017 so far - Chehalem Cultural Center in Newberg for March-April, 2017 and Crossroads Carnegie Center in Baker City for June of 2017. The exhibit brochure is also in the works and will be available for online orders in January of 2016.

Whisper
Quilts from the Central Oregon SAQA Group
March 1 - 31, 2015
Pendleton Center for the Arts
214 North Main
Pendleton, Oregon
Five groups of "Whisper" quilts from Central Oregon SAQA members are being shown at the Pendleton Center for the Arts, 214 North Main, during the month of March. Groups of five to six people were drawn out of a hat. Number one person made a small wall quilt and passed it on to number two person with no comments and no title. Number two person "responded" to the piece in some way and made her quilt, one month later she passed it on to number three and kept the first quilt. At the end of six months we had a reveal party and shred the quilts. It was amazing how they all related to each other in each group.

New Additions To The Exhibit:
In looking at our database we recently discovered that a few of the quilts were left off the list of accepted quilts. We deeply regret this error and are doing our best to correct it. We will now be adding seven new quilts to the exhibit in time for The Rogue Gallery opening.  We will also be printing an insert for the exhibit brochure that will feature the following artists and their quilts: Judith Quinn Garnett - “Explorations”, Judy Peterson - “Homage to the Dead”, Karen Spencer - “here, there & everywhere”, Karen Bates - “And you?”, Bevalee Runner -  “A Time For Every Purpose Under Heaven”, Toni Smith, “Connections” and Diane Born – “The Joy of Summer.”

Exploring Layers

April 16 – May 16, 2015

Air Gallery, Pioneer Place Mall, Portland, Oregon
Opening reception: Saturday April 18, 5 to 9 pm
Special SAQA reception: Saturday May 2, 1 to 3 pm
Closing reception: Saturday May 16, 5 to 9 pm
Exploring Layers is an exhibit of textile art featuring work
from the Oregon and Southwest Washington members of
the Studio Art Quilt Associates.  The theme Exploring
Layers has stimulated their members to create many pieces
expanding the boundaries of contemporary textile art.
This work explores many layers of thought and an expanded
view of fibers as a medium.  The curators for Exploring
Layers are proud to present this work to the Oregon public.
The exhibit seeks to further promote quilting and its
evolution from craft to artform.
As you know, "Exploring Layers' will be having a glorious final showing at the Air Gallery in Pioneer Place Mall in Portland from April 16 to May 16. It's a great opportunity for SAQA - a central and much-visited location, a beautiful gallery, we share opening and closing receptions with the other three art galleries on the 3rd floor of Pioneer Place - so we will have lots of visitors, roaming from one gallery to another - plus a special reception on Saturday May 2 (1 to 3 pm) , timed to coincide with the "Fiberlandia" conference.
