Trisha Hassler Offers Studio Classes

Hope this finds you all well, excited about the year ahead and ready to try something new in the way you work with fiber.  I will be offering several classes this spring as outlined below and hope to cross paths with you all soon:

HAND STITCHING
The Hand Stitching Class is always a favorite of mine, I have attached the class handout for a brief summary of what to expect over the 2 days.  Please let me know if you have any special requests or questions about this class.  I have been working on a thread blending technique that would be fun to share as well.

CREATIVE ATTACHMENTS
Several of you also requested my class on Creative Attachment Techniques for adding additional found object or hand made elements to your work.  Here is a handout for that class.  This class covers several different techniques you can use with many different materials, not just fabric.  You are invited to bring something you are already working on to move it forward. Also great to know about special requests.

Each class will be held at my home studio in NW Portland.  There is space for 5 students in each 2 day session.  Because of the intimate group, I will address personal areas of interest and have lots of time with each person, so bring something you are working on, have questions about or want to try for the first time.  The cost per student per day is $125.  Bring your own lunch, or get lunch from close by Whole Foods , Cha Cha Cha, or other.  Street parking or mass transit available.

Expressive Stitching
When you work in a way that invites an observer in for a closer look, it requires a slower pace... both for the maker and for the viewer. The intimacy that results is very rewarding for both.  You will experiment with time honored hand stitching techniques that will enhance your work. We will explore length, thickness, density, contrast and color by making samples used to construct a small reference book. We will also work as a group on several small collaborative pieces to create a unique
example of hand work.

Exploring Creative Attachment Techniques
Would you like to add an unexpected element to your art quilt? Perhaps some found object that helps tell your story with a little more imagination. Something curious that’s not expected in the world of quilts.Bring your challenging found objects to class and we’ll explore various techniques to attach these elements to your fiber art works so they enhance your piece and intrigue your viewers. You will work with various tools and elements ending up with samples to showcase your favorite techniques for reference.

Trisha Hassler Featured in Surface Design Journal

The Winter issue of Surface Design Journal is focusing on mixed media textile works.  The opening article, “Consider the Alternatives” is a feature on the work of SAQA Oregon member Trisha Hassler written by Sarah Margolis-Pineo, of the Museum of Contemporary Craft here in Portland.  The Journal should arrive in your mailbox this week.  Congratulations, Trisha!

Call for Conference Volunteers

The first-ever SAQA Oregon Conference on March 6, 2014 in Newberg, OR, is fast approaching! If you plan to attend the conference (and we hope you all do), please consider volunteering to help with one of the tasks that will need to be done on the day of the conference. We are looking for help with the following:

Greeting and registration from 8.30 a.m. onwards - one person to greet people as they arrive, and two people to process registrations.

Four people to take down tables in the gallery following lunch.

Four people to help with takedown after the conference.

Weidner Gets Cover of NQA Magazine

2015 National SAQA Conference in Portland!

SAQA will hold its 2015 national conference in Portland, Oregon! The conference will be held April 30 to May 3, 2015 at the Double Tree in near Lloyd Center. There will be lots of activities and happenings around town. More info to come!

Textile Fiber Forum Features DeNicolis Meyer Art

Jeannette DeNicolis Meyer's quilt, Crucible, is on the cover of the Australian magazine Textile Fibre Forum this month, and her article, If This Then That: An Approach To Art And Teaching,  is featured on pages 34 and 35. She will be teaching at Grampians Texture, a fiber conference in a state park near Melbourne, Australia in February.

 

Bonnie Bucknam to Speak at Northwest Quilt Guild, Portland, December 9, 2013

Bonnie Bucknam will be the featured speaker at the Northwest Quilters Guild meeting on Monday December 9, 2013, at 7pm.  The meeting will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 7810 SE 15th Street, Portland, Oregon.

Here's a bit about Bonnie's lecture, Sticks and Stones:

Bonnie Bucknam’s art quilts have won national and international recognition, including Quilt National 2011 Best of Show.  Her quilts are abstract interpretations of the natural world.  Join her as she takes you through the design and construction processes used in her latest two series of works. You’ll see her evolution as an artist and follow her creative process through the step-by-step construction of some of her recent quilts.
