3. SAQA Mentorship Program by Sherri Culver
The SAQA Mentorship Program  is a one-to-one peer mentoring program that has been offered since 2015.  There are two types of mentoring, a basic development option and one for those preparing to submit a portfolio for JAM membership.

Some of you may wish to become Mentors and share your knowledge and experience with a less experienced person.  Others may want to become Mentees (awful word!) and have a more experienced artist available to help guide them towards meeting specific goals.

There are so many reasons working with a mentor makes sense.  Some artists need a boost in confidence, some are floundering and have no idea how to move forward, some have a specific project in mind and could use technical advice.  Sue Bleiweiss (sue@bleiweiss.com) developed this program and is skilled at matching mentoring partners.  If you have questions, you can contact Sue, but check out the information on the SAQA website first.  (SAQA website / Members / Member Resources / Professional Development / Mentorship Program)

I have been a mentor since the program began and I have learned so much from the women I have been assigned.  Some are in the US and some are in countries around the world.  There are many ways mentoring partners connect.  Telephone, conferencing software, Skype, email, etc.  Each pair decides how it will work best for them.

It is amazing how different quilting is in different parts of the world.  I have learned how to look at art objectively and to appreciate different styles.  I find my experience applies to situations far removed from my personal work and it is truly fun to share, get to know others, and especially to see another’s work blossom forth as she gains confidence.

SAQA Oregon Newsletter - October 2016

SAQA Oregon held our second regional conference on September 22nd, 2016, at the beautiful, historic Willamette Heritage Center in Salem, Oregon. Seventy two people attended, including speakers. The theme of the conference was "New Dimensions - into the future". We explored the subject of 3D fiber art, which is engaging the attention of an increasing number of art quilters. Our morning program included a keynote speech by Kay Khan of New Mexico, who presented her innovative and colorful 3D fiber work; a panel discussion on the challenges of including 3D work in a fiber art show; and a very successful one-day, non-juried exhibit of members' 3D fiber art pieces, with 42 pieces shown. The afternoon program included a presentation on copyright issues for artists, and a series of six very well-received table-top presentations/demos by members on innovative techniques and approaches.  Our next regional juried exhibit, “Bridge", was announced.
In the evening, many people viewed our current regional juried exhibit: "Blending Poetry and Cloth" and attended the opening reception for the exhibit, hosted by the Willamette Heritage Center. The exhibit will be shown there until December 22nd.  Entry to the Willamette Heritage Center, where the exhibit is hung, is free to SAQA Oregon members and their guests until the exhibit is taken down in late December. Please tell the person at the front entry desk you are a member, and they will check your name on our list.

Save the dates for the 2017 SAQA Conference, “Creation to Curation”, April 27-30 in Lincoln, Nebraska; early bird registration until November 1st.  The Layered Voices SAQA Exhibition will open at the International Quilt Study Center & Museum during the conference  The 2017 SAQA Trunk Show will premier at the conference; online entry closes November 30, 2016.

The SAQA Education Committee has developed an exciting new project called SAQA Seminar, a multi-media collection of content on a specific theme designed to inform, inspire and connect SAQA members. The theme for SAQA Seminar 2016 is STITCHING and will run from September through December. About 800 fiber enthusiasts attended the Quiltopia event at the Willamette Heritage Center Sept. 30th to October 3rd. Many of them visited the exhibit space for Blending Poetry and Cloth and often stayed in the room 30-45 minutes. Deb Sorem and Mary Goodson talked with exhibit docents to provided background information on the art quilts. A list of exhibitors with sales price and email addresses was provided to the Heritage Center staff. It will be displayed in the exhibit space with the quilts.
Our next showing of the exhibit will take place at the Chahalem Cultural Center in Newberg from April 4th to May 27th, 2017. We're going to install the exhibit on March 27 or 28th. We'll need three volunteers to help with the half day install. Let us know if you are available.

3. 2016 SAQA Oregon Regional Conference by Elizabeth Bamberger
We were really grateful for all the support provided to us by SAQA National, including handling at no cost the entire registration process, the insurance coverage and lower shipping rates for bringing our keynote speaker's art pieces to the conference, and for all the help with processing financial matters. Thank you so much!

We were very pleased with the members' keen interest in the theme of 3D art, with many questions asked of the keynote speaker and the panelists; and with the high level of engagement in the table-top presentations. The Blending Poetry and Cloth exhibit looked beautiful in the exhibit space and was very well received. We had a wonderful 12-member planning committee who started planning early and worked extremely hard and willingly to produce all the elements of our program and exhibit; also many willing volunteers who stepped up to help out on the conference day. For future reference, we have noted the importance of carefully testing ahead of time that all connections between computers, projectors etc work, and of providing the venue staff with a detailed diagram of exactly where tables will be placed, specifying the number of tables required etc. We are also considering whether we might offer a rather shorter afternoon program in future, to avoid audience fatigue.

Upcoming SAQA Oregon Exhibit - "Bridge"

Call to SAQA Oregon Artists
Bridge

Oregon is a state filled with bridges ranging from the mythological Bridge of the Gods to the contemporary Tilikum Crossing.  The concept of “Bridge”, though, is much broader. A bridge can be the symbolic image of chrysalis to butterfly.   Bridges are a connection and a link. They are bonds and pathways—both physical and emotional—between people and things. A bridge joins and unites. It spans time and traverses space. It reconciles differences creating harmony. It represents progress, stability, hope and transition.  We invite artists to submit work that reflects the theme of “Bridge” either in a representational or abstract interpretation.

Both 2-D and 3-D work will be considered.

Juror:  Jane Dunnewold - internationally known artist, author and teacher

The Call for Entry for our “Bridge” SAQA Oregon Regional Exhibit has been posted on the SAQA Calendar of Calls for Entry at www.saqa.com/calls

Meet Sidnee Snell

Sidnee Snell of Portland, Oregon

Profile Questions:

1.  How would you describe the work that you make? Do you have an elevator speech? Have you found your "artistic voice"?

I use fabric and stitch to create an impressionistic image of subject matter that interests me.
I consider my work to be representational, although it sometimes appears abstract. I enjoy odd angles, the effects of light and shadow, and close-up views.

Red Laces
Sidnee Snell 2012

2.  What brought you to making fiber art? What is your art, sewing, or fiber background? When did you make your first quilt that you considered "art"?

I have been working with fiber and fabric since girlhood, including a stint as a custom dressmaker in high school. I made my first 'art' quilt in the late-nineties. My early art quilts were geometrical and abstract in design. They were heavily influenced by traditional quilts and my studies with Nancy Crow and other prominent art quilters.
Tools of the Trade
Sidnee Snell 2001

3.  Describe the steps involved in your art-making process.

Each of my pieces begins with a digital image, usually one of my own snapshots. Using the computer, I eliminate much of the detail, creating an impression of the subject rather than a photorealistic re-creation. The pieces are constructed using a machine appliqué technique and machine quilting.
PDX Phase 2 - detail
Sidnee Snell 2010

4.  What is your one favorite or most common source of inspiration?

It all starts with an observation. My art-making is part of an ongoing, internal conversation where I attempt to answer the questions “What am I seeing? Why do I keep looking?” An everyday, often overlooked, object or view captures my attention and begs for further exploration. I am generally attracted to imagery that includes a man made component.
Sanctuary
Sidnee Snell 2015

5.  Do you enter your work in shows? What would you say have been your top three exhibits?

I apply to shows and/or galleries occasionally. My favorite three were:

Guardino Gallery 2014
Quilt National 2013
Quilted Surface' at the Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus OH 2002
Riveted
Sidnee Snell 2012

6.  Describe your studio space.

My studio space is in the basement of my home. I had the basement finished specifically as studio space and it truly meets my needs. It's well lit, well organized and I love it. I also use the garage and back yard part time when I have too many things in progress to contain them in the studio.
Sidnee in her studio

7.  How much time do you spend on your art? How do you balance your life between art, family, friends, day job, etc.?

It's hard to say. Art and life are so intertwined. I try to spend time daily in the 'making' process whether it's making art or making craft or making food (especially dessert!).

8.  Do you work in other mediums or use unusual materials in your work?

I knit, spin, bake and I'm learning to sketch and paint. Other than the computer, I tend to prefer traditional materials in all my making.
